Liability coverage limits of insurance. The limit of
liability for bodily injury and property damage can be
expressed either as a single limit or as split limits. A
single limit defines the total amount the insurer will pay
for all bodily injury and / or property damage, including
any covered pollution expenses, resulting from a single
accident.
Example: If an insured had a single limit of $100,000
and one accident resulted in $75,000 in bodily injury and
$35,000 in property damage, the most the insurer would pay
is $100,000. The remaining $10,000 in damage would not be
covered.
A split limit shows separate limits for bodily injury per
person, bodily injury per accident, and property damage per
accident. For example 50/100/10 limits would represent
$50,00 bodily injury per person, $10,000 bodily injury per
accident property damage per accident. The bodily injury per
person limit is the most the insurer will pay per person
involved in a single accident. The bodily injury per
accident limit is the most the insurer will pay for bodily
injury in a single loss, despite the number of people
injured, or vehicle involved. The property damage per
accident limit is in addition to bodily injury per accident
limit. If a covered loss involves injury and property
damage, the most the insurer would pay is the combined
bodily and property damage per accident limits. Split limits
must be endorsed on the policy.
Example: If the insured had coverage of 50/100/10 the
maximum the insurer would pay for both bodily injury and
property damage resulting from a single accident would be
$110,000. However if 2 people are injured in the accident
both with $75,000 in injuries the most the insurer would pay
is $50,000 per person or a total of $100,000 plus property
damage loss up to $10,000.
